5 BIG Lessons From COVID-19

Updated: Jan 31

COVID-19, to the best of my knowledge, started from a small market in China, 3000 kilometres away. This virus multiplied rapidly across geographical boundaries and infected more than 19 million people and caused the death of over 7 lakh. Unfortunately,I too fell victim to it.

Corona virus is far from over rather it is expected to last at least another year until we find an effective vaccine.

“In these dark and uncertain times, there can be great value in imagining

a bit of star in each human soul.

Not just that it gives some hope for humanity at a time when man’s

inhumanity to man seems ever on the increase;

but also because it points to an inner brightness

that can light the way in dark times.”

Michael Meade, The Genius Myth

One thing is beyond doubt - when something of this magnitude comes to be - it comes to teach us a lesson. What those lessons are vary from person to person, country to country, culture to culture and societies to societies. Here I want to tell you the top 5 lessons I learnt from the coronavirus.

1) LIFE IS TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY UNPREDICTABLE.

The world changed at the drop of a hat when this pandemic was reported. Before COVID life for most meant travelling, socializing, going to the workplace or to university and school. Many complained about this type of fast paced- rat race like life - which had come to be.

Then came corona and staying at home, working from home, maintaining distance, avoiding people became the "new normal".

This is a lesson for our generation. It should be an eye opener to all of us. When I realized that life can this easily be disrupted by something which is not even in my control I realized it is very important to do something I love. I let this pandemic shake me and wake me into realizing things I always passively knew. That is to follow your idiosyncrasies no matter what they are. Because as cliche'd as it sounds. Life is beautiful and Life is short. Don't waste it following anything or something which makes you sad. I understand there are many other things and that just enjoying life is also not feasible. So I would suggest ATLEAST ADD to it a pinch of self romance.

2) WE ARE ALL CONNECTED

We are all connected and no I don't mean just on social media. But in real physical life. All those people we don't think about like farmers, migrants, labors, housekeepers, drivers, cooks, farmers, vegetable sellers, shopkeepers are more associated to us. We forget this since digital life took us over.

I also realized their huge contribution to bettering our lives which goes unnoticed. So I decided I wont judge anyone and respect where each individual comes from.

3) HEALTH AND IMMUNITY ARE IMPORTANT

I never thought of health holistically. Health is complete and total well being. It includes physical, mental, emotional peace. It is not about weight management only it is also about our ability to fight diseases and be agile. It is about hydration, good fruits and foods. It is about being mentally stable and emotionally joyful. These things affect our health, our diabetes, blood pressure and internal organs. It's time to learn more about our bodies. This is also something I learnt.

4) NOT TO RESTRICT OUR LOVE

Generally we love only our near and dear ones like friends and family or popular figures like actors , movie stars and politicians. There is a huge section of people like doctors, nurses, volunteers, policemen , social service workers etc who also need to admired and cherished. Something we don't do. So I learnt not to restrict my love but expand it beyond my immediate environment.

5) EXPRESS GRATITUDE

Expressing thankfulness, gratefulness and kindness goes a long way. It spreads love, makes us content, makes us humble. It can make even a pauper successful. Thank your past , your present and your future. Everything happens for a reason. Learn from it, thank it and strive ahead. Along the way don't forget to be generous.
